What is it?
Urbino is a small city in the Marche region of Italy. It was an important center of art and learning during the Renaissance. The Duke of Urbino, Federico da Montefeltro, was a great patron of the arts. He built a beautiful palace and invited artists to work there. Urbino became famous for its maiolica pottery. The workshop of Francesco Patanazzi was one of many that produced painted ceramics in Urbino. The basin you saw was made there around 1600.
