What is it?
Turkey is a large country that sits between Europe and Asia. It has mountains, forests, and a long coastline. The eastern part of Turkey is where Wagner's viper lives, on rocky hillsides near rivers. The viper is found in the provinces of Kars, Erzurum, and Arsin. It prefers cooler, north-facing slopes with more moisture and vegetation. The Bulgardagh Mountain Viper lives in the mountains of south-central Turkey, in rocky slopes and valleys at high elevations.
Why it matters
Turkey has many unique animals and plants. Protecting its habitats helps save species like Wagner's viper and the Bulgardagh Mountain Viper from extinction. The rediscovery of Wagner's viper in 1983 shows that there is still much to learn about Turkey's wildlife.
