The warm region around the middle of the Earth, near the equator.
What is it?
The tropics are the area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. It is warm all year and has lots of rain in some places. Many colorful plants like bromeliads and orchids grow there. The tropics have the most kinds of plants and animals on Earth. Phalaenopsis orchids are native to tropical Asia.
Why it matters
The tropics are home to more than half of the world's species. They are important for the planet's health. Learning about tropical plants helps us understand biodiversity.
