Lake Titicaca
A huge, high-altitude lake in the Andes mountains between Peru and Bolivia, home to the Titicaca water frog.
What is it?
Lake Titicaca is the largest lake in South America by volume and the highest navigable lake in the world, at 3,812 meters above sea level. It sits on the border of Peru and Bolivia. The lake is home to many unique species, including the Titicaca water frog (Telmatobius culeus), which lives only in this lake. The frog spends most of its time in the water, especially in shallow areas.
Why it matters
Lake Titicaca is a unique ecosystem with many endemic species. Protecting the lake from pollution and overfishing is important for conserving the Titicaca water frog and other wildlife.
