Thebes was a major city in ancient Egypt. It was the capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom. It is located on the Nile River. The city was home to the great temples of Karnak and Luxor. The Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens are nearby. The coffin of Henut-wedjebu was found in the Valley of the Kings near Thebes.
Why it matters
Thebes was the religious and political center of Egypt for centuries. Many of Egypt's most famous monuments are there.
