A country in Southeast Asia made up of many islands, home to the Gray Tree Monitor and many other unique animals.
What is it?
The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It has tropical rainforests, mountains, and coastal areas. The Gray Tree Monitor (Varanus olivaceus) lives on the islands of Luzon, Catanduanes, and Polillo. Many other endemic species live only in the Philippines, such as the Philippine eagle and the tarsier.
Why it matters
The Philippines has very high biodiversity with many species found nowhere else. Protecting its forests is important for conservation, especially for endangered species like the Gray Tree Monitor.
