Lake Titicaca
A large, high-altitude lake in South America, shared by Peru and Bolivia, and home to the Titicaca water frog.
What is it?
Lake Titicaca is a very large lake high in the Andes Mountains, on the border between Peru and Bolivia. It is one of the highest navigable lakes in the world. The water is cold and has low oxygen. Many unique animals live here, including the Titicaca water frog (Telmatobius culeus), which is found nowhere else.
Why it matters
Lake Titicaca is a unique ecosystem with species that have adapted to its harsh conditions. The Titicaca water frog is critically endangered due to hunting and pollution. Protecting the lake helps save this frog and other wildlife.
