What is it?
Lake Titicaca is the largest lake in South America by volume and the highest navigable lake in the world, sitting at 3,812 meters (12,507 feet) above sea level. It is located in the Andes Mountains on the border of Peru and Bolivia. The lake has many islands and is known for its unique wildlife, including the Titicaca water frog (Telmatobius culeus), which lives only in this lake.
Why it matters
Lake Titicaca is an important ecosystem with many endemic species. It is also culturally significant to the indigenous peoples of the region. Protecting the lake from pollution and overfishing is crucial for conservation.
