Tokara Islands
A group of islands in southern Japan, home to the Tokara Habu snake.
What is it?
The Tokara Islands are a chain of islands in the Ryukyu Islands, part of Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. They have a subtropical climate with moist broadleaf forests. The Tokara Habu (Protobothrops tokarensis) is found only on these islands. Other animals include the Ryukyu flying fox and the Amami rabbit.
Why it matters
The Tokara Islands have unique species found nowhere else. Protecting their forests is important for conservation.
