Provence
A region in southern France known for its sunny weather, lavender fields, and beautiful landscapes.
What is it?
Provence is a region in southeastern France, along the Mediterranean Sea. It has a warm climate, rolling hills, and many farms. In the late 1800s, many artists went to Provence to paint its bright light and colorful scenery. Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles and Saint-Rémy in Provence from 1888 to 1890. He painted many of his most famous works there, including "Wheat Field with Cypresses" and "Starry Night." The landscape of Provence inspired his use of bright colors and swirling brushstrokes.
Why it matters
Provence was a key place for Post-Impressionist artists. Its unique light and colors helped shape modern art.
