Triassic Period
The time when dinosaurs first appeared and turtles began to evolve, from about 252 to 201 million years ago.
What is it?
The Triassic Period is the first period of the Mesozoic Era. It began after the Permian extinction and ended with another extinction. During this time, the first dinosaurs, mammals, and turtles appeared. The climate was hot and dry. Turtles evolved during the Triassic, making them one of the oldest reptile groups.
Why it matters
The Triassic Period set the stage for the age of dinosaurs. Understanding it helps us learn how life recovered after a mass extinction.
