A time from about 1750 to 1820 when artists and architects looked back to ancient Greece and Rome for ideas.
What is it?
The Neoclassicism period began in the mid-1700s. It was inspired by the discovery of ancient Roman cities like Pompeii. Artists wanted to create art that was rational, moral, and heroic. The style was popular in Europe and America. The painting "Arria and Paetus" was made during this period, around 1770.
Why it matters
The Neoclassicism period produced many famous paintings, sculptures, and buildings. It influenced the design of government buildings and monuments.
