Neoclassicism
An art style from the late 1700s that looked back to ancient Greek and Roman art for inspiration.
What is it?
Neoclassicism was a style of art, architecture, and design that became popular in Europe and America in the late 18th century. Artists wanted to revive the simplicity, order, and moral seriousness of classical antiquity. They used clear outlines, balanced compositions, and calm emotions. Subjects were often from ancient history or mythology. Jacques-Louis David was the leading Neoclassical painter. His painting "The Death of Socrates" is a perfect example: the scene is orderly, the figures are sculptural, and the story teaches a lesson about courage and philosophy.
Why it matters
Neoclassicism was a reaction against the fancy, dramatic style of Baroque and Rococo. It reflected the ideals of the Enlightenment, like reason and virtue. It also influenced the architecture of many government buildings, like the U.S. Capitol.
