Neoclassical Period
A time in the late 1700s and early 1800s when artists and architects were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome.
What is it?
The Neoclassical period lasted from about 1750 to 1850. It began in Europe as a reaction against the fancy Rococo style. Artists wanted to return to the simple, strong, and serious art of ancient times. They painted stories from history and mythology, often about moral lessons. The painting "Arria and Paetus" was made during this period.
Why it matters
Neoclassical art shows how people in the 1700s looked back to ancient Rome for ideas about virtue and duty. It influenced architecture, furniture, and fashion. Many government buildings today are Neoclassical.
