What is it?
The Modern Period in art began around 1900 and lasted until about 1970. Artists like Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Jackson Pollock broke the old rules. They used bright colors, abstract shapes, and new techniques. Picasso's Blue Period (1901–1904) was part of this time. Modern art can be confusing, but it's about expressing feelings and ideas in new ways. The "Head of a Woman" was painted in 1903, at the very start of the Modern Period.
Why it matters
The Modern Period changed art forever. It showed that art doesn't have to look realistic to be powerful. It opened the door for all kinds of creative experiments.
