Medieval Europe
The time in Europe from about 500 to 1500 AD, also called the Middle Ages.
What is it?
The Middle Ages began after the fall of the Roman Empire and lasted until the Renaissance. It was a time of castles, knights, and great cathedrals. Most people lived in small villages and worked as farmers. The Church was very powerful, and many people went on pilgrimages to holy places.
Why it matters
Many of the things we see in museums today, like this limestone statue of Saint Christopher, were made during the Middle Ages. Art and architecture from this time tell us about people's beliefs and daily life.
