Late Medieval Period
The time from about 1300 to 1500 in Europe, when Gothic art was at its peak and the Renaissance was beginning.
What is it?
The Late Medieval period was a time of change in Europe. The Gothic style dominated art and architecture. Many cathedrals were built, and sculpture became more realistic. The St. Christopher sculpture was made in the late 1400s, near the end of this period. The Renaissance was starting in Italy, but Northern Europe still followed Gothic traditions. This sculpture shows the Gothic love for natural details and spiritual expression.
