What is it?
Impressionism was an art movement that began in France in the 1860s. It lasted until about 1900. Artists like Monet, Renoir, and Degas rejected traditional painting and focused on capturing light and everyday life. Degas's 'Little Dancer of Fourteen Years' was created in 1881, during the height of Impressionism. The child's reflection describes the sculpture as an Impressionist masterpiece.
Why it matters
This period changed art forever. It opened the door for modern art and showed that artists could paint and sculpt whatever they wanted.
