A time in Japan from 1603 to 1868 when the country was ruled by shoguns and isolated from most of the world.
What is it?
The Edo period was a long period of peace and stability in Japan. The capital was Edo (now Tokyo). During this time, sushi developed as a fast food. The sushi you saw in the exhibit originated in this period.
Why it matters
The Edo period shaped modern Japan. Many traditions, like sushi, kabuki theater, and ukiyo-e art, started then.
