The period in Europe from about 1500 to 1800, when empires grew and new ideas spread.
What is it?
The Early Modern period followed the Middle Ages. It was a time of exploration, colonization, and the rise of powerful empires like the Holy Roman Empire. Art and science flourished during the Renaissance, which was part of this period. Charles V ruled during the early part of this period. The bronze statue of Charles V was created during this time.
Why it matters
The Early Modern period shaped the modern world. Many of our political systems, scientific discoveries, and art styles began then.
