What is it?
The Classical period in Greece was a time of great achievement. The city-states of Athens and Sparta were powerful. Philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle lived then. Artists created sculptures that looked natural and showed movement. The statue of Artemis running is an example of Classical art. The period ended with the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE.
Why it matters
Classical Greek art set the standard for beauty and realism in Western art. Many later artists copied Greek styles. Understanding this period helps you appreciate many museum masterpieces.
