Chola Dynasty
A powerful dynasty that ruled southern India and parts of Sri Lanka from about 300 BCE to 1279 CE.
What is it?
The Chola dynasty was one of the longest-ruling families in history. They controlled a large empire in southern India and even parts of Southeast Asia. The Cholas were great patrons of art, especially bronze sculpture. They built many temples and created beautiful statues of Hindu gods. The bronze Shiva Nataraja you saw was made during the Chola period, around the 12th century.
Why it matters
The Chola period is considered a golden age of Tamil culture and art. Their bronze sculptures are among the finest ever made. Understanding the Chola dynasty helps you appreciate the art and history of India.
