Blue Period
A time in Pablo Picasso's life when he painted mostly in blue and blue-green colors, showing sad and lonely subjects.
What is it?
The Blue Period lasted from about 1901 to 1904. During this time, Picasso was sad because his friend Carlos Casagemas had died. He used mostly blue colors to show sadness, poverty, and loneliness. He painted beggars, blind people, and poor families. "Head of a Woman" (1903) is a Blue Period painting. The blue colors and the woman's expression create a feeling of melancholy.
