Thutmose
An ancient Egyptian man who lived during the New Kingdom and had a funeral stela made for his tomb.
What is it?
Thutmose was a person who lived in ancient Egypt around 1332–1295 BCE, during the 18th Dynasty of the New Kingdom. We know about him from his funerary stela, which you saw. The stela shows him with gods and scenes from his funeral. He was probably a wealthy person, maybe a noble or official, because he could afford a carved stone stela and shabti figurines. The child's reflection mentions that the stela is a funeral stela of Thutmose.
Why it matters
Thutmose's stela gives us a glimpse into the beliefs and rituals of ancient Egyptians. It shows how they prepared for the afterlife and what they thought was important.
