Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770) was an Italian painter from Venice. He is famous for his large ceiling paintings in palaces and churches. His style is light, colorful, and full of movement. He often painted angels, gods, and heroes floating in the sky. He used a technique called "di sotto in sù" (from below upward) to make figures look like they are really above you. The child's reflection describes his painting of a religious or mythological scene with many angels and figures in the sky, typical of his ceiling frescoes.
Why it matters
Tiepolo is considered the last great painter of the Venetian tradition. His work influenced many later artists. His ceiling paintings are masterpieces of illusion and color.
