Canaletto (1697–1768) was a painter from Venice, Italy. His real name was Giovanni Antonio Canal. He became famous for painting vedute — very detailed pictures of Venice's canals, buildings, and boats. He used a camera obscura to help him get the perspective right. His paintings were very popular with English tourists who visited Venice. The gondola parade painting you saw is a typical example of his work, showing a festive scene on the Grand Canal with the Santa Maria della Salute church in the background. Canaletto's paintings were often bought by British aristocrats as souvenirs of their Grand Tour.
