Anton Raphael Mengs (1728–1779) was a German painter. He was one of the first artists to paint in the Neoclassical style, which looked back to ancient Greek and Roman art. He was famous for his clear lines, calm emotions, and religious scenes. He painted "The Adoration of the Shepherds" around 1764–1765. He worked for kings and nobles across Europe.
Why it matters
Mengs helped change art from the fancy, curly Rococo style to the simpler, more serious Neoclassical style. His work influenced many later artists.
