Paint
A colored liquid that artists use to cover surfaces.
What is it?
Paint is made by mixing colored powder (pigment) with a liquid (binder) that makes it stick. Different binders make different kinds of paint: egg yolk for tempera, oil for oil paint, water for watercolor. Paint can be applied with brushes, fingers, or tools. It dries to form a colored layer.
Why it matters
Paint allows artists to add color and detail to sculptures, walls, and canvases. Many old sculptures were painted to look more real and beautiful. The Holy Family sculpture you captured was painted with tempera, which gives bright, lasting colors.
