Still Life with Oysters, Fruit, and Wine
A painting of oysters, fruit, and wine on a table, made by Osias Beert the Elder around 1610. It shows how rich people lived in Flanders, but also reminds us that life is short.
What do you see?
You see a wooden table with a white cloth. On it are oysters on a plate, a glass of white wine, lemons, cherries, and other fruits. There are also flowers in a glass vase. The artist painted every detail carefully: the shiny shells, the juicy fruit, and the reflections on the glass.
Look closely
- Can you see the reflection of the window in the wine glass?
- Look at the oysters: they are wet and shiny. Can you almost feel their texture?
- The flowers have some wilting petals. Why do you think the artist included that?
- How many different fruits can you count?
- The lemons are cut open. What do you notice about the way the artist painted the peel?
Style and technique
This is a still life painting. Osias Beert the Elder was one of the first Flemish artists to specialize in still lifes. He used a light palette and painted with great detail. He built up layers of paint to make the objects look real. The composition is balanced: the plate of oysters in the center, the wine glass on the left, and the fruit and flowers around them.
Feeling
This painting feels calm and luxurious. It makes you want to reach out and taste the food. But the wilting flowers and the half-eaten oysters also give a quiet message: everything fades. This is a vanitas painting, reminding us that pleasure and wealth do not last forever.
Connections
Try this
- Draw your own still life: arrange some fruit, a glass, and a flower on a table. Try to paint the reflections and shadows.
- Look at the painting for one minute. Then close your eyes and try to remember every object. How many did you remember?
- Talk about vanitas: what things in your life are temporary? What lasts forever?
