Symbiosis
A close relationship between two different living things that helps one or both of them.
What is it?
Symbiosis is when two different species live together in a close relationship. There are different types: mutualism (both benefit), commensalism (one benefits, the other is not harmed), and parasitism (one benefits, the other is harmed). In the diorama, moss and ferns growing on a tree stump show a form of commensalism: the moss and ferns get a place to grow, and the stump is not harmed. Moss and ferns also help each other by sharing moisture and nutrients, which can be a form of mutualism.
Why it matters
Symbiosis helps species survive and thrive. It is a key part of how ecosystems work. Understanding symbiosis helps us appreciate the connections in nature.
