Shiva
One of the main gods in Hinduism, known as the destroyer and transformer, who also creates and protects.
What is it?
Shiva is a major god in Hinduism. He is part of the Trimurti, along with Brahma (the creator) and Vishnu (the preserver). Shiva is often shown with a third eye, a snake around his neck, and a trident. He is the god of destruction, but destruction that makes way for new creation. He is also the god of dance, as Nataraja. Shiva lives on Mount Kailash and is often meditating. He has a wife, Parvati, and two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya.
Why it matters
Shiva is one of the most important gods in Hinduism. Understanding Shiva helps you understand many artworks and stories from India. The Nataraja sculpture you saw is a famous image of Shiva.
