Shark
A type of fish with a skeleton made of cartilage, not bone.
What is it?
Sharks are fish that have been in the ocean for over 400 million years. They have no bones — their skeleton is made of cartilage, the same stuff your ears are made of. Their skin is covered in tiny teeth-like scales called dermal denticles. Sharks are predators, meaning they hunt other animals. Some sharks are huge, like the whale shark, which can be as long as a bus. Others are small, like the dwarf lanternshark, which fits in your hand.
Why it matters
Sharks are important for keeping the ocean healthy. They eat sick or weak fish, which helps fish populations stay strong. Without sharks, the ocean would be out of balance. Many sharks are endangered because of overfishing. Learning about sharks helps us protect them.
