What is it?
Saint Benedict was a monk who lived in Italy around 480–547 AD. He is known for writing the Benedictine Rule, a set of guidelines for how monks should pray, work, and live together. He also performed miracles, like healing people and seeing visions. The painting you saw shows one of his miracles. Benedict is often shown in art wearing a black monk's robe and sometimes holding a book or a staff.
Why it matters
Saint Benedict is called the father of Western monasticism. His rules are still used by monks today. He shows how one person's ideas can influence many people for a long time.
