Rainforest
A thick, wet forest with lots of rain, tall trees, and many different plants and animals.
What is it?
A rainforest is a forest that gets a lot of rain every year. The largest rainforest is the Amazon in South America. Rainforests are very biodiverse — they are home to more than half of the world's plant and animal species. The Conchocarpus macrophyllus you captured grows in the Brazilian rainforest. The Red Spiral Ginger (Costus woodsonii) also grows in rainforests of Central and South America. Rainforests have layers: the canopy, understory, and forest floor. The Red Spiral Ginger often grows in the understory, where it gets dappled light.
Why it matters
Rainforests are important for the Earth's climate. They produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. They also provide medicines, food, and other resources. Many rainforest plants are used in traditional medicine.
