What is it?
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) was a secret society of artists founded in 1848 by John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and William Holman Hunt. They were against the boring, dark paintings taught at the Royal Academy. They wanted to paint like artists before Raphael — with bright colors, lots of detail, and real emotions. They signed their works with the initials PRB. Millais's 'The Return of the Anglo-Saxon' is an example of their style.
Why it matters
The PRB changed British art forever. They inspired many later artists and made people look at art in a new way. Their paintings are now in major museums around the world.
