Narrative Painting
A painting that tells a story, often showing several events from the story in one picture.
What is it?
Narrative painting is a type of art that tells a story. Sometimes the painting shows just one moment, and sometimes it shows many moments together, like a comic strip. The Story of Joseph painting is a narrative painting: it shows Joseph being sold, interpreting dreams, and meeting his brothers all in one frame. This technique is called continuous narrative. It was popular in the Renaissance and earlier.
Why it matters
Narrative paintings help us understand stories visually. They were especially important before many people could read. They also show the artist's skill in composing a complex story in a single image.
