What is it?
A monument is something built to help people remember someone important or something that happened. Monuments can be statues, temples, or even whole buildings. The Abu Simbel temple is a monument built by Ramesses II to celebrate his power and his victory at Kadesh. Monuments are often very large and made to last a long time.
Why it matters
Monuments tell us what people in the past thought was important. They help us remember history and learn about different cultures.
