Medieval Art
Art made in Europe during the Middle Ages, from about 500 to 1500 AD.
What is it?
Medieval art includes paintings, sculptures, stained glass, and manuscripts created in Europe between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance. Much of this art was religious, showing scenes from the Bible or saints like Saint Christopher. Artists used materials like stone, wood, gold, and pigments. The sculpture you captured is a late medieval limestone statue of Saint Christopher, made around 1390.
Why it matters
Medieval art tells us what people believed and valued. It also shows the skill of artists who worked without modern tools. Many medieval artworks are still in churches and museums today.
