Maternal Care in Reptiles
When a reptile parent takes care of its eggs or babies.
What is it?
Most reptiles lay eggs and leave them. But some, like the Timor Python, stay with their eggs. The mother coils around the eggs to protect them from predators and to keep them warm. This helps the babies survive. The Timor Python is a good example: the female wraps her body around the eggs and stays with them until they hatch. Fish like the Mayan Cichlid also show parental care: both parents build a nest and guard the fry for about a month. This is similar to maternal care in reptiles, though it happens in water. The Mayan Cichlid parents construct a bowl-shaped nest in the mud and protect their young for about a month.
Why it matters
Maternal care is rare in reptiles. Studying it helps scientists understand how parenting evolved in animals. Comparing it to fish like the Mayan Cichlid shows how different animals have evolved similar behaviors.
