Cultural Symbols
Objects, animals, or images that represent ideas or values in a culture.
What is it?
Many animals become symbols in different cultures. The Secretary Bird is a symbol of bravery and agility in Africa. It appears on the coats of arms of Sudan and South Africa. It also appears in comics and art because of its unique look. Elephants are also powerful cultural symbols. In India, the elephant-headed god Ganesha represents wisdom and prosperity. In Thailand, white elephants are royal symbols. In many African cultures, elephants symbolize strength, leadership, and memory. Peccaries also have cultural significance: in some cultures, they are seen as symbols of wealth or used in ceremonies.
