Cosmetic Vessel
A small container used in ancient times to hold perfumes, oils, or makeup.
What is it?
Cosmetic vessels are small jars or bottles used to store cosmetics like kohl (eye makeup), perfumes, or scented oils. In ancient Egypt, both men and women used cosmetics. The narrow jar you captured is from the Middle Kingdom (about 2055–1650 BCE). It is made of ceramic or stone. These vessels were often placed in tombs so the deceased could use them in the afterlife.
Why it matters
Cosmetic vessels show that ancient people cared about appearance and hygiene. They also reveal trade networks, as ingredients like myrrh and frankincense were imported from faraway lands.
