Chinoiserie
A style in European art that uses Chinese designs and subjects, often mixing real and imaginary elements.
What is it?
Chinoiserie (pronounced sheen-wah-zuh-REE) is a French word for a style that became popular in Europe in the 1700s and 1800s. European artists and designers were fascinated by Chinese art and culture. They created paintings, furniture, and decorations with Chinese-style pagodas, dragons, flowers, and people. Sometimes the designs were accurate, but often they were imaginary. Zacharie Astruc's painting "The Chinese Presents" is an example of chinoiserie, showing a European and a Chinese person exchanging gifts.
Why it matters
Chinoiserie shows how cultures influence each other. It also tells us what Europeans thought about China long ago. Today, chinoiserie is still used in design and fashion.
