Carnivorous Plant
A plant that traps and eats insects or other small animals to get nutrients.
What is it?
Carnivorous plants are plants that get some of their nutrients by trapping and digesting animals, usually insects. They often grow in poor soil where other plants can't get enough food. There are many types, like pitcher plants, Venus flytraps, and sundews. The pitcher plant you saw is a carnivorous plant. Pitcher plants use tube-shaped leaves to trap insects. The leaves are slippery and have downward hairs, so insects cannot escape.
Why it matters
Carnivorous plants show how plants can adapt to harsh environments. They are also fascinating to study because they do something we usually think only animals do: eat other creatures. They help control insect populations in their habitats.
