Digging tunnels or holes in the ground to live in or hide.
What is it?
Burrowing is when an animal digs a hole or tunnel in the ground. The Gopher Tortoise is a great burrower: it uses its strong legs to dig burrows up to 45 feet long. Many other animals also burrow, like rabbits, moles, and prairie dogs. Burrows help animals stay safe from predators and weather.
Why it matters
Burrowing animals change the soil and create homes for other species. They help keep ecosystems healthy by mixing soil and creating spaces.
