Burrow
A tunnel or hole dug by an animal to live in or hide.
What is it?
A burrow is a hole or tunnel that an animal digs in the ground. Animals use burrows for shelter, to raise their young, and to escape from predators and weather. The Gopher Tortoise digs burrows that can be up to 45 feet long. Other animals that dig burrows include rabbits, prairie dogs, and meerkats.
Why it matters
Burrows provide safe homes for many animals. Some burrows, like those of the Gopher Tortoise, are used by many other species, making them important for the whole ecosystem.
