What is it?
An arch is a curved shape that supports weight from above. Arches have been used for thousands of years in bridges, doorways, and monuments. The Gateway Arch in St. Louis is a very tall arch made of stainless steel. It is shaped like a catenary curve, which is the same shape a hanging chain makes.
Why it matters
Arches are strong and beautiful. They allow builders to create large open spaces without many columns. The Gateway Arch shows how modern architects use arches to create amazing landmarks.
