A civilization in southeastern Europe that flourished from about 800 BCE to 146 BCE, known for its art, philosophy, and democracy.
What is it?
Ancient Greece was made up of city-states like Athens and Sparta. The Greeks invented democracy, theater, and the Olympic Games. They made beautiful sculptures, pottery, and buildings like the Parthenon. Philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle asked deep questions. The painting of Socrates' death shows an important event in Athenian history. Greek art and ideas influenced the Romans and later European culture.
Why it matters
Ancient Greece is called the birthplace of Western civilization. Many of our ideas about government, science, and art come from the Greeks.
