Alkaloid
A natural chemical made by plants that can have strong effects on the human body.
What is it?
Alkaloids are compounds that contain nitrogen and are often bitter-tasting. Many plants produce them to defend against insects and other animals. Some alkaloids are used as medicines, like the vincristine from Madagascar periwinkle that treats cancer. Others, like caffeine and nicotine, are stimulants.
Why it matters
Alkaloids have been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine and are the source of many modern drugs. Studying them helps scientists discover new treatments.
