Blackfeet (Niitsitapi)
A Native American people who lived on the Great Plains and were known as skilled bison hunters.
What is it?
The Blackfeet, or Niitsitapi, are a group of Native American tribes: the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani. They lived in what is now Montana and Alberta. They followed the bison herds and used every part of the animal. They were known for their warrior societies and beautiful beadwork. The pipe bag you saw is a Blackfeet object, used to carry ceremonial pipes.
Why it matters
The Blackfeet have a rich culture with deep spiritual traditions. Their art, like beadwork and pipe bags, tells stories of their history and connection to the land.
